An action often taken during a safety investigation is to see whether the cause which created a particular incident exists in other area.  This is known as determining the extent of the condition.

Root cause analysis for other investigations (customer complaints, audit findings, etc.) should also adopt such an idea.  Note that this is not the same as containment action relative to the problem symptoms, but instead at a deeper level.  It would also fit into the realm of preventive action.
